From mid-November to late February we do not see the sun at all. This is what is called Polar Night. Because we are so far north the sun simply doesn’t rise in this period. The opposite of that is midnight sun where the sun does not set for several months.
After driving dogsled during most of the dark season we are all longing for seeing the sun again. Then finally the day arrives where the huge fireball is painting the landscape with its golden colour and you feel how happiness is rushing through your body.
Sun means spring and spring means new life and the intuits had their own way of welcoming the sun. They would gather on a mountain top and point their palms towards the rising sun.
We decided to honour the sun in the same traditional way.
